We do it properly. The right backing for the size of the hole, mesh tape at joints, three thin coats of compound with drying time between, and a final sand that feathers the edge out so the patch disappears under any light. Same approach for fire-rated, wet-area and acoustic plasterboard — we match the original specification so the wall keeps its rating.
